Best home wallboxes for EU drivers

Most homes need 11 kW and a box that saves the electrician work, so the Easee Charge Up and ABL eMH1 lead. Pay for a MID meter only if an employer or tax rule asks for one.

If you buy through a link here, the store may pay me a commission. Your price stays the same. How that works.

  1. 22kW

    Best for most private cars

Easee Charge Up 22 kW socket

Type A RCD and DC sensor built in, so the installer adds only a circuit breaker. Easee's sheet rules out charging reimbursed by consumption, solar charging needs the Equalizer, and Zerofy says it leaves the EU market at the end of 2026.

    €549

  2. 11kW

    Best plain tethered box

    ABL eMH1 11 kW 6 m cable (1W1101)

A 6 m cable and a key switch, nothing else to set up. No meter, app or network link.

    €439

  3. 11kW

    Best for company cars

    KEBA KeContact P40 11 kW 6 m MID, white

MID meter, Modbus and a 6 m cable, and ADAC's top score in its 2025 company-car round. Surplus solar needs a separate KEBA E10 meter.

  4. 22kW

Best MID meter at 22 kW

Zaptec Go 2 22 kW socket, black

1.6 kg with a MID meter and a 5-year warranty. It has a socket, so you supply the cable.

    €749

  5. 11kW

    Clearest mobile-data terms

    go-e Charger Gemini 2.0 11 kW

A built-in SIM with at least 5 years of free data. go-e's shop says it may not be used in the Netherlands, France or Italy, citing legal provisions it doesn't name, and lead time was 6 to 7 weeks.

    €819

  6. 11kW

MID at 11 kW, with a question mark

Alfen Eve Single S-line 11 kW socket

IP55 and IK10 casing with a MID meter, but a 2-year carry-in warranty and a separate Type A RCD to fit. A different S-line article number failed ADAC's 2022 safety check, and I found no test of this one.

The results here aren't mine. ADAC's scores come from e-mobileo's overview of its tests and ADAC's own page for the Alfen, and specs come from The Mobility House and go-e. Prices are German shop prices, checked 2 November 2026. Other countries differ.

Start with three questions. Does your car take more than 11 kW on AC? Zerofy, a charging software firm, says most don't, so 11 kW or 22 kW is usually a short read. Does anyone need a certified meter? And which country are you in?

The country matters more than I expected. go-e's shop says the box below may not be used in the Netherlands, France or Italy, citing legal provisions it doesn't name, and Germany wants grid operator consent above 12 kVA, per Ingenieur.de. Norway's 230 V IT grids, says Zerofy, call for a charger approved for them. Ask before you buy from a German shop.

Easee Charge Up

€549, and it's what I'd buy for a private car. The Mobility House says the RCD and DC sensor inside mean the installer adds only a circuit breaker, and that's the saving I'd look for. Rated 22 kW, with 11 kW among its settings. The catch is an uncalibrated meter: Easee's own sheet says it can't be used where charging is reimbursed on consumption. Solar needs the Equalizer. Zerofy says this model leaves the EU market at the end of 2026, so ask who supports it after that. I found no independent test, and there's more in my Easee Charge Up review.

ABL eMH1

€439 gets you 11 kW, a 6 m cable and a key switch. Nothing else. The Mobility House lists no meter, app or network link. ADAC gave a sibling, the 1W1121, a 2.1 in its 2024 round of cheap boxes. Buy it for a garage where you'd never open an app.

KEBA P40

At €1,010 you pay for the paperwork side: a MID meter, Modbus, and a 6 m fixed cable. ADAC's 2025 round on company-car boxes put a KeContact P40 first at 1.6, though e-mobileo doesn't say which variant. Skip it unless an employer pays or wants the data. Ingenieur.de reports that German rules since 2026 ask for a separate meter on reimbursed home charging, so check what yours accepts first.

Zaptec Go 2

€749 for a 22 kW box with a MID meter and 5 years of warranty. It's the one I'd pick if you need certified metering, a socket and a 22 kW car in the same box. It stops at IP54. I didn't find an ADAC score for this model.

go-e Gemini 2.0 11 kW

€819, shipping extra. The reason to buy it is the SIM: go-e promises at least 5 years of free mobile data, then €12 a year, so it works on a driveway Wi-Fi doesn't reach. Easee's eSIM is free too, but The Mobility House doesn't say for how long. The meter is a plain counter. Warranty is 3 years. Lead time was 6 to 7 weeks on go-e's shop.

Alfen Eve Single S-line

€619 buys a MID meter and IP55, IK10 casing, which looks good on paper. I've ranked it last, and the first reasons belong to this model. The warranty is 2 years carry-in, so a dead box gets posted back. The Mobility House also says it needs a Type A RCD in the house wiring, where the Easee, ABL and KEBA have one inside.

The rest is history, and not this unit's. ADAC failed the S-line 90446058 in 2022: at its 200 mA DC fault measurement the box tripped too late in both its "immediate" and "smart" modes, for a safety mark and overall result of 5.0, "mangelhaft". Stiftung Warentest gave a 904460587 the same 5.0. Both had a fixed 5 m cable. This listing is the 904460583, a socket version, and I found no test of it.

Alfen told ecomento in March 2022 that one factory setting caused the result, and that it would change the German default and the manual. ADAC's page says both modes tripped late, so those accounts don't match. A different box, the Eve Single Pro-Line DE, got 1.9 from ADAC in 2025, per e-mobileo. So I wouldn't call this one unsafe. I would ask Alfen or your installer what changed since 2022, or spend €749 on the Zaptec instead.

The fitting is its own job, and how to install a wallbox goes through it. All six sit under home chargers.
