EV running-cost calculator
Pick a car from the spec sheet or type its kWh per 100 km. Set your tariff and your mileage. You get the cost per 100 km and per month, and the same distance on petrol.
Where the starting numbers come from
This counts energy only. Insurance, tyres, tax, servicing and depreciation aren't here, because I have no source that holds across Europe. The car list reads the live spec sheet, so a new model joins by itself. These starting numbers are EU averages with dates on them, so yours will differ.
- Electricity at home: €0.28/kWh
- Eurostat, EU27 household price, 2,500 to 5,000 kWh a year, all taxes, first half of 2026: €0.2832. Germany pays €0.3618, the Netherlands €0.2440. Your bill beats this number.
- Public charging: €0.55/kWh
- Eleport price report, October 2026: median across 29 countries, UK included, for DC fast charging. Eleport runs chargers, so read it as an operator's figure. AC posts are often cheaper: €0.38 in the Netherlands (Tap, June 2026), though 52.30 cents ad hoc in Germany (ACE, July 2026).
- Share of charging away from home: 15%
- My assumption for a driver with a home charger, not a statistic. If you can't charge at home, set it to 100%.
- Added to the WLTP figure: 25%
- WLTP flatters every car. EV Database estimates real range 18 to 24% under WLTP for the Model Y Long Range, Renault 5 and Elroq 60, which works out at 22 to 31% more energy per km. These are its estimates, not tests. In ADAC's 0°C test, mostly motorway, consumption ran 57% above WLTP. WLTP figures already include charging losses, so nothing is added for those.
- Kilometres a year: 11,400
- Germany, 2025: the Federal Motor Transport Authority's average per car, as reported by web.de. I couldn't read an EU-wide figure.
- The petrol car: 7.4 l/100 km
- Real-world use for petrol cars registered in 2021 and 2022, worked out from the European Commission's report on on-board fuel meters, published 26 July 2024. A hybrid picked from the list uses its WLTP figure plus 20%, which is the real-world gap the same report found.
- Petrol: €1.95/l
- European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin, Euro-super 95, EU27 weighted average with taxes, week of 26 October 2026: €1.954. That's high: the same file shows €1.615 a year earlier. Change it and the savings move a lot.
